Many people will read this and say well the money to clean up litter and illegal dumping  comes from a grant- Let me ask you, where does the grant money come from? Taxpayers.

New Mexico Clean and Beautiful gives out grants for illegal dumping clean up, beautification and litter control. Lobato said last year alone, $600,000 was distributed to communities around the state of New Mexico.

“In 2010 we had more than 39,000 volunteers around the state cleaning up 298 dump sites,” he said. That added up to 243,757 hours of volunteer work.

The New Mexico Environment Department also grants money to clean up illegal dumping, as part of their effort to stop it. We give out grants every January,” said Tim Gray, environment specialist outreach at NMED. “Last year we gave out $125,000 to cleaning up non-tire illegal dumps, and $125,000 supporting recycling. The other two-thirds of the budget went to clean up illegal tire dumps.”
